Understanding the Islamic Calendar
The Islamic calendar, also known as the Hijri calendar (التقويم الهجري, at-taqwīm al-hijrī), is a lunar calendar consisting of 12 months in a year of 354 or 355 days. It is used by Muslims worldwide to determine Islamic holidays and rituals, such as the annual period of fasting and the proper time for the Hajj pilgrimage.

- Lunar Based: The Islamic calendar is strictly lunar, following the cycles of the moon
- Days Begin at Sunset: In the Islamic calendar, days begin at sunset rather than midnight
- Year Count: The calendar begins with the year of the Hijra, when Prophet Muhammad migrated from Mecca to Medina (622 CE in the Gregorian calendar)
- Month Length: Months alternate between 29 and 30 days, with the 12th month having 29 or 30 days depending on visibility of the new moon
- Year Length: An Islamic year is about 11 days shorter than a Gregorian year, causing Islamic dates to cycle through all seasons over a 33-year period
